How to Grow Your Wanderburg Castle
Mass is power until something hungrier notices you.
Wanderburg’s hook is physical growth. You do not unlock a bigger sprite in a menu and call it a day. The keep actually expands across the isometric field. Turning gets worse, rams hit more, you block your own escape routes, and bosses that ignored you last minute suddenly fit you in their mouth. This page is the growth loop: what to eat, when to draft, and when to stop being greedy.
If you still need the first-run briefing, go back to getting started. If you already bounce off giant silhouettes, skip to how to beat bosses after you understand size.
Eat the small economy first
Sheep, chickens, and farm tiles are the safest XP. They barely fight back. Bicycle knights and stray soldiers are the next rung. Villages and rolling cottages pay better and take longer to chew. Other player-scale keeps are the high-risk stock. The rule that never gets old: if the silhouette is larger, you are food.
Playtest chatter mentions artifacts that pay extra gold per sheep or nitro for consuming trees. Those are real modifiers in videos, not a complete item bible. When you see one, ask whether it changes your route. A sheep-gold artifact wants you to stay in pasture instead of diving a barracks. A tree-nitro toy wants you to clip forests on the way to a fight. Build the route around the modifier, not the other way around. Crew and artifacts collects the ones we can name.
XP drafts versus shop gold
In-run growth is the survivor-like draft: extra damage, extra crew, a new module, a rare repair team. Between-run growth is gold. Confusing the two is how people go broke. A shiny in-run rare that saves this map is often correct. Spending your last shop gold on a captain whose text you do not understand is not.
Demo creators talk about stacking health through repair crew, then noticing that ram and stun hammer fall off if you never bought a melee identity. Growth is a theme. If every draft is “whatever is rare,” you become a wide, slow buffet. The module tier list and best builds exist to give those themes names: ram-boost, fire circle, vampire sustain, barracks swarm.
Size is a hitbox
The funny deaths happen after a good streak. You are huge, you clip a hill, you cannot rotate in time, a steamroller kisses the entire model. Growing is not always the win condition. Sometimes the win is staying medium, keeping a turning circle, and banking gold.
Use boost as a size tax payment. Large keeps need nitro to change heading. If your fourth slot is empty, strongly consider boost before a vanity cannon. Several health-stacking videos end up saying the same sentence: armour without boost is a coffin.
Bosses as growth gates
Beating a rival fortress is how you push the snowball. It is also how you get deleted. Treat bosses as optional until your mouth is in the same weight class. Vacuum castles punish clumps of troops. Bumper castles punish bad angles. Fire-eye structures punish standing in a beam. None of that cares that you “needed” one more level.
When you do commit, bring a plan from how to beat bosses and a loadout from the loadout checklist. Growing into a fight with three unrelated modules is how highlight videos get their joke thumbnails.
Meta growth for Early Access
Randwerk has talked about multiple difficulty levels, extra biomes, and about three player vehicles for the Early Access window. That means growth will eventually include frame choice, not just module count. Spider-leg locomotion showed up in trailers and previews as a way to replace wheels. Do not expect the demo’s single frame to be the whole garage on 8 September 2026.
Until then, practise the habit: eat safe mass, draft a theme, spend gold on a sentence you can explain, and leave the map before you become the map. That habit travels to the desert.
If you want a picture of a keep that has already gone too far in the best way, the video in the middle of this page is a long growth run. Pause it when the castle starts having trouble turning. That pause is the lesson.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Wanderburg questions.
Why do I get slower as I grow?
You occupy more of the field. Boost, cleaner turning, and not parking in boss mouths matter more than another raw HP roll.
Is it better to grow wide or stack one module?
Stack a theme. Wide kits stall. See best builds for ram-boost, fire mage, and sustain examples.
Do I keep my size after death?
No. Size is in-run. Gold, captains, and unlocked modules persist. Spend like a shopper, not like a hoarder who never dies.
When should I stop eating villages?
When a larger fort is on the same snack. Fleeing with gold is growth. Greed without an escape lane is a highlight for someone else.
