Captain Tier List

Captain rankings are softer than module rankings because the roster is still leaking out in demo patches. Dieter the Drunk was a post-Next Fest add. More portraits will arrive with Early Access on 8 September 2026. This page grades the names we can source on captains for a grasslands demo player who already knows controls.

For recipes, use best builds. For hardware, use modules.

S-tier: vampire sustain, gold printers

A captain that heals as you consume matches the game’s joke. You want to eat anyway. Sustain lets you stay in pasture long enough for fire circles and barracks to work. It is weaker if you insist on honour-duelling a larger keep. Size still rules; see how to beat bosses.

Gold printers are S for the meta-game. Wanderburg’s long-term power is the shop. If your goal is unlocking fire mage, ram, and a repair crew, a boring gold bonus beats a flashy corpse. Several creators say this out loud while buying the rest of the board.

A-tier: Dieter the Drunk, The Count

Dieter is A rather than free S because handling is the tax. In a ram-boost kit he looks broken. In a mortar kite he is a steering penalty with a hangover. Watch the melee video on the captains page before you spend.

The Count-style consume-heal is a slower vampire. A-tier on long loops, B-tier if you never find flocks. It rewards how to grow your castle routing.

B-tier: Norbert the Normal, cannon-contract captains

Norbert is B in raw power and S in education. This is a power list, so he sits in B. You should still play him first. Tutor captains that look “bad” are how you learn why Dieter feels good.

Cannon-bonus captains that also buff incoming cannonballs are B with an asterisk. Take them on kite kits. Skip them on ram kits that already live in other people’s personal space.

C-tier: double-speed, nitro-starved hunters

Captains that accelerate the whole match or strip nitro in exchange for XP on vehicle kills are content, not comfort. They make great clips and brutal first hours. Put them behind a completed demo walkthrough.

Racer Ruth sits here until more public tooltips exist. Speed names in this design space are never free. When a patch publishes a clean sentence, we will move her.

Spending order versus letters

Buy Norbert’s lesson with your time, not your gold. Buy a gold printer or vampire with your first real purse. Buy Dieter when ram is already unlocked. Buy gimmicks last. That order beats any S-row screenshot.

If two captains seem equal, pick the one whose downside you can see on the HUD. Hidden handling taxes are how wikis get angry comments.

A practical test after you buy someone: play one grasslands loop without opening the shop mid-run. If you cannot remember the bonus while a vacuum castle inhales the lane, the portrait is too clever. Swap back to Norbert or a gold printer, then retry the gimmick on a fresh purse. Captains are a steering style. If the style needs a wiki open, it is not your style yet. Cross-check the loadout checklist so the four modules still match the new portrait.

The video in the middle of this page is a full demo conversation about upgrades, not a sterile ranked intro. Steal the shop discipline.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Wanderburg questions.

Is Dieter the best Wanderburg captain?

He is the best melee clip. He is not the best teacher and not the best shop farmer. Match him to ram-boost or skip him.

Should I skip Norbert because he is B-tier?

No. Play him until turning is boring. Letters are for gold, not for your first hour.

Do these ranks include desert captains?

No. Desert content is still a trailer peek. See biomes.

Where is the name list without letters?

On the captains page.
