Wanderburg Tips and Tricks
What 200,000 demo players learned the hard way.
Every Steam Next Fest demo has a moment where a thousand players discover the same secret at once. Wanderburg’s version is usually: the steamroller was not a boss, it was a Tuesday. This page collects the tricks that public gameplay reveals and the rules that survivors repeat.
Stack this with getting started, controls, and how to grow your castle. If you are still dying to things larger than you, the food chain rules on this page are faster than the boss guide.
The three food chain rules
Wanderburg runs on municipal Darwinism. The rules are not suggestions.
Rule one: eat smaller. Sheep, chickens, farm plots, lone soldiers, bicycle knights, small rolling cottages. They are slow, they pay in gold and XP, and they rarely fight back. This is your pension fund.
Rule two: flee larger. If the silhouette dwarfs your keep, boost away. Gold from sheep buys the unlock that makes the next fight possible. Dying with a full purse to a size check is not a defeat; it is a lesson in timing.
Rule three: when in doubt, leave. A five-minute coward run that banks currency is smarter than a twenty-minute heroic corpse. The demo walkthrough describes this as a spending plan, not cowardice.
Ram is an angle, not a button
The single most common new-player mistake is treating ram like a frontal tank button. It is not. Ram wants an angle: front corner to enemy side, hit, leave. Head-on collisions with steamrollers are how vacuum castles find their lunch.
Dieter the Drunk and other melee captains change the math. Even then, creators who post one-shot montages also post the wall hits. Steering matters more than the damage bonus.
If you cannot drive straight, do not pick the drunk melee captain for your first kill. See captains.
Boost management is survival
Size taxes turning. Nitro pays the tax. Health-stacking videos eventually admit they needed boost as the get-out button, not the go-faster button. The draft rule is simple: if your kit has no movement tool, take boost before you need it.
Demo footage names dash and teleporter as cousins. They are not worse; they are higher skill. A teleporter that blinks you into a mouth is not an escape tool. Practise the weave before you bet the run on it.
The sheep tax is real
Consuming sheep and chickens pays gold. Artifacts that multiply sheep gold exist. Crew that prints gold-over-time exist. Players who ignore the flock and chase large forts end the run poor and dead.
The gold farming page is the dedicated guide. The tip here is the rule: do not skip the flock on your way to a boss. The boss will still be there after you clip the pasture.
Size is a difficulty slider
When you grow, you occupy more pixels and you become a more attractive meal. This is not a metaphor. Demo players who snowballs too aggressively in the first five minutes often feed a steamroller that was not hunting them until they became the largest thing on the map.
The trade-off is real: more size means more fire, more modules, more presence. It also means the food chain notices you sooner. How to grow your castle goes deeper on this math.
Four slots, one identity
The most common anti-pattern in public runs: four unrelated modules that cannot be described in one sentence. The build fails not because the pieces are weak, but because the driver cannot explain what the keep does.
Write the sentence first. Delete the slot that does not serve it. See best builds and the loadout checklist.
The demo is a teaching biome
Grasslands is the tutorial region. The rules here work in the demo because the demo is grasslands. Desert and other biomes in Early Access may change movement, enemy reads, and which modules flex best. See biomes before you assume sand plays like grass.
The video in the middle of this page is a Next Fest capture that names the mistakes in real time. Watch for the empty boost bar at the worst moment. That is the tip.
When to recheck the demo
Randwerk pushed demo updates after Next Fest, including new captains and balance changes. If your client is older than the current Steam listing, you may be playing a version the community has already moved past. Check official links for demo update news.
The rule: if a captain or module is not on captains or modules, your client may be older than the wiki. Compare before you write a guide based on a version nobody else has.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Wanderburg questions.
What is the single most important Wanderburg tip?
If it is larger than you, leave. Gold from sheep buys the unlock that makes the next fight possible.
Does boost count as a module slot?
Yes. Treat it like any other active. Ram without boost is a one-hit tool; ram with boost is a sentence.
Should I chase large forts?
Only if you are larger. Otherwise, sheep first, boss second.
What happens if I grow too fast?
You become the most interesting thing on the map. The steamroller notices.
