Bank or die trying. Gold survives the shop.

Gold Farming

Gold is the only currency that survives your keep getting eaten. XP resets. Module drafts reset. Gold in the purse buys the next captain, the next module, the next crew row. This page is the strategy guide for not leaving the demo poor.

Stack with getting started, captains, and crew and artifacts. If you want the spending plan, use the demo walkthrough. If you want the numbers, keep reading.

The coward run is a valid strategy

A five-minute run that banks gold is not a failed run. It is a shopping trip with a tutorial attached. Players who die dramatically with full purses often played the food chain correctly until the last decision.

The coward run rule: clip the flock, take the gold, leave before the silhouette check. You do not need to fight the large fort. You need the purse.

Sheep, chickens, and the passive economy

The base pay from consuming animals is small but consistent. Sheep pay gold. Chickens pay gold. Farm plots pay gold. The cumulative effect over a fifteen-minute run is real.

Players who skip the flock to chase large forts end the run with big XP and no gold. The boss they killed dropped a module upgrade. The shop they cannot afford did not.

Artifact multipliers for gold

Demo shops include artifacts that multiply gold from consumed sources. Sheep gold artifacts appear in multiple public runs. These are the highest-return pickups if your run plan is to survive and shop.

Pair sheep gold artifacts with gold-over-time crews. The crew prints while you are moving. The artifact multiplies what you collect. The combination is the demo’s closest thing to a gold engine.

Magnet-style pickups that pull nearby gold piles also appear in playtest footage. These are in-run conveniences, not a strategy. Leave the magnet artifact for last if you are unsure.

Gold-over-time crews

Repair crews and gold-over-time crews occupy the same slot. The trade-off is survival versus income. Repair keeps you alive longer, which means more time collecting. Gold-over-time prints while you collect.

For coward runs: gold-over-time. For boss-hunting runs: repair. See crew and artifacts for the full list.

Captains that affect gold

Some captains or captain-like bonuses generate extra gold. Gold printers are the meta pick if your goal is unlocking the rest of the shop rather than a pretty corpse.

The captains page lists the names that appear in public footage. Watch for consume-X-generates-gold bonuses in the shop text. If the rule sounds like it prints gold, it probably prints gold.

The spending priority

Demo gold is finite. The spending priority from the demo walkthrough is still the correct shape:

  1. One captain whose bonus you understand.
  2. One module that fills a hole in your kit.
  3. A crew that either repairs or prints gold.
  4. Stop. Play.

Do not buy every portrait because it is there. Demo gold is meant to last multiple runs. Spreading it thin across unlocks you will not use is how players end a session with four captains and no sentence.

When to prioritise gold over XP

Level-ups give module choices. XP gives power within a run. Gold gives power across runs. The trade-off is not always in XP’s favour.

A run that banks maximum gold but skips the large fort’s XP is still a successful session. A run that chases every silhouette and dies with a full purse and no unlocks has the priorities wrong.

The loadout checklist has a written rule for this: bank before vanity. The video in the middle of this page is a health-stacking run that keeps choosing the same theme. Gold farming is the same stubbornness applied to the purse.

Early Access and the larger economy

Early Access on 8 September 2026 will add more shop rows, more vehicles, and presumably more gold sinks. The base rules here will not change. Sheep will still pay. Larger forts will still be a choice between risk and reward. The coward run will still be valid.

When new biomes arrive, duplicate the gold logic per floor. Desert gold sources may differ from grasslands. Until we have public desert footage, this page stays grasslands-first.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Wanderburg questions.

What is the fastest way to earn gold in the Wanderburg demo?

Combine sheep gold artifacts with gold-over-time crews. The coward run that banks maximum gold is faster than the heroic run that dies poor.

Should I skip fighting bosses to farm gold?

Yes, if the boss is larger than you. Sheep pay gold. The boss pays XP and a module choice. Only fight if you can win.

What crew should I use for gold farming?

Gold-over-time crew for coward runs. Repair crew for boss-hunting runs. They occupy the same slot.

Does gold carry over after death?

Yes. Gold is the only currency that persists after your keep is eaten. Spend it in the between-run shop.
